Original Article : http://sports.khan.co.kr/entertainment/sk_index.html?art_id=202004090730003&sec_id=540301 Kim Boa and Kim Bohyung return as KEEMBO: “We’re touched to hear people thanking us for promoting again; we’ll enjoy ourselves this time” Girl group SPICA’s Kim Boa and Kim Bohyung have returned as a duo, the name KEEMBO coming from the shared ‘Kim’ and ‘Bo’ characters in their names. They released a digital single on April 10, and will make a proper return to the music industry. SPICA have been inactive for three years since 2017, and the duo have made a comeback with the pop ballad “Thank You, Anyway”. The song is about breaking down the walls in an isolated world, with a message of hope that is sure to resonate with listeners. KEEMBO spoke with Sports Kyung Hyang on April 6, expressing with excitement about their comeback, “It still doesn’t feel real.” Bohyung: “Boa unnie and I both participated in the composition and lyrics. We spent a lot of time and effort in the recording studio to convey the emotions and nuances of the song. There are softer spoken parts as well as more powerful moments, and we hope we managed to express them well. Boa: “The song we originally planned to release was more upbeat, but because of the COVID-19 situation, we had to postpone our showcase [that was meant to be on April 14]. We then decided to release this song instead, to match the weather while it’s still chilly. We’re currently producing more songs, and we hope to let everyone hear different types of music from us.” Anyone who hears the name ‘KEEMBO’ would probably say “Aha!” and think they know the meaning behind it. When asked, Bohyung said, “It was Boa unnie’s idea. [laughs] I’ve always thought it was amazing that I had a group member with a name just one character different from mine. During our SPICA days, we were known as ‘Big Bo’ and ‘Little Bo’. Compared to the other group name suggestions, I’m more drawn to this one A match made in heaven just from their names alone, the two stayed in touch after SPICA parted ways. Apart from personal friendship, they never stopped bonding over their shared love for music, and the idea for an album was thus born naturally. Boa: “We get along very well – we’d go out for delicious meals and even went snowboarding in winter. Even though we’re not working when we meet and we’re just having fun, music is still our common interest and we’d end up talking about music-related things. We were on the same page, so the idea of making an album together came naturally. Bohyung promoted solo two years ago and I also wanted to make music as well, but to be honest, I was a little afraid. But if we can give each other support and make up for our mutual shortcomings, then we’ll have the confidence to achieve together what we couldn’t do alone. We’re enjoying making music together, and we’re sure we’ll enjoy promoting together too.” Bohyung: “I also keep in touch with the other members, and there’s nothing uncomfortable between us at all. Boa unnie and I talk about music-related topics a lot and we have similar mindsets, so we formed this duo very happily.” KEEMBO have grown to rely on each other after five years in SPICA, and they are now starting anew. Bohyung: “I feel like I didn’t have the emotional capacity [to face our situation] back then. As the maknae of the group, there wasn’t much I could do about it. Hearing things like “They’re so talented but why can’t they make it?” made it even harder and more stressful. During my three-year hiatus, my nature has changed, I’ve found inner peace and I’m now different from who I was in the past.” Boa: “It’s harder to meet new people as we get older, and even when we do, it’s difficult to form close bonds. Because we already know each other so well, we can skip most of that and it’s comfortable working together on many things. I was passionate and ambitious about work when I was younger, but it also made me impatient. I now understand that it’s counterproductive and started to let go of this mindset, and from now on I hope I’ll be able to enjoy our activities fully. We’ve created our KEEMBO YouTube channel, and we’re thankful that so many people are supporting and awaiting our activities. Comments like “Thank you for promoting again” make us want to work even harder.” Boa and Bohyung have found themselves after a three-year hiatus, and they’re actively planning to meet their thankful fans again. Boa: “Although it’s a pity that we can’t meet our fans right now due to the current situation, we’re trying to use YouTube more to connect with everyone. It’s our first time doing this, so there are some hiccups. [laughs] In terms of music show promotions and variety shows, we’ll do our best as long as there’s an opportunity. We’re going in a completely different direction from the past: if SPICA’s focus was stage performances, we hope KEEMBO’s focus will be telling our stories through activities and especially public performances. Other than the time SPICA held a showcase in Tokyo, we’ve never experienced having a performance all to ourselves. Even though we can’t meet in person now, we hope the situation turns around soon so we can see our fans again.” Comments are closed.
