They debuted as idols, but post-disbandment they now wish to be known as ‘artists’. Their journey has not been smooth, but even though they faced failure and frustration at every turn, the setbacks only served as motivation for them to stand up again – music is indeed what made the both of them who they are today. On April 17th, Kookmin Ilbo interviewed KEEMBO and Boyfriend’s Jeongmin. Q1. Q1. How did you get through the hiatus? KEEMBO。 Boa: I felt soulless for a while after Spica disbanded. I didn’t listen to music much and I felt very lethargic. It felt like I’d thrown away everything; I didn’t take care of myself and I put on a lot of weight. At one I point I looked back on myself and realised how poor my appearance had become, so I pulled myself together and got back to working as a vocal guide and providing vocal harmonies. That made me want to make my own music even more. Bohyung came into the picture then, and that’s how KEEMBO was formed. Bohyung: I released a solo album, but the main thing was going on vacation. I watched performances and saw exhibitions, and it changed my state of mind. I was impatient back when we were promoting, but I found inner peace during my vacation. Although there have been all sorts of worries, I’ve never thought about giving up on singing. Q2. Q2. How did you overcome your hardships? Boa: It kept feeling like I was getting eliminated. Every time a talented rookie group debuted and caught the public’s attention, it made me anxious and I kept thinking, “Do I have the same competitive spirit?” But later on I woke up from this and realised that it isn’t about beating others, but rather about showing who I was. Bohyung: There were definitely tough times. I was a singer who started to dislike singing and didn’t even have the energy to sing. I didn’t know what stories to put into my music nor what sort of emotions to convey, and everything just felt bland. When I felt like this, I would think of our fans and how they would encourage me not to give up, which made me realise that my music could in fact have an influence on people. Q3. Q3. What’s the difference between music production during your idol days and now? Boa: [As an idol group] everything is already prepared nicely for you. Of course you’ll need talent to perfect the performance, but my role in it wasn’t that important. I wasn’t content with the situation back then, but looking back I now realise how easy we had it. We have a lot more to do now, and everything is busier and more complicated. We also have to find our own unique colour and direction. We’re overwhelmed due to how involved we are in the production process, but at the same time we’re really proud of ourselves. Bohyung: Other than music production, there are other tasks to worry about and many things to learn. The best thing is looking forward to the next day. I also often think to myself, “I wonder what I’ll be like three years from now?” Q4. Q4. Where do you get your inspiration from and is the process like? Boa: Our team consists of composers and lyricists. We get together and everyone shares their opinions from the beginning. We listen to the songs made in Bohyung’s and my respective styles, and then we have a discussion using questions like “When you listen to this part, what do you think?” Bohyung: Nothing is set in stone from the start; we exchange all sorts of ideas before starting production. I believe music shouldn’t be created with loneliness. We always have a good time when we’re working. Q5. Q5. What is the significance of this album? Bohyung: ‘Thank You, Anyway’ is a song about a timid person finding their courage to overcome their hardships in an isolated world. It’s a song with a hopeful message. Boa: Our song is a song that everyone, regardless of age or gender, can connect with. Q6. Q6. What kind of singer do you want to be remembered as? 但是如果要做到這樣的話,要成為「國民歌手」才行嗎?(笑) Boa: I hope that one day when someone thinks of the singer ‘Kim Boa’, they’ll dig out her songs to listen to. I want to be the sort of singer that lingers in people’s minds. Ah but to achieve this, I’ll have to become the Nation’s Singer, don’t I? Bohyung: I want to become a singer who provides comfort and can be a good influence through my music. Q7. Q7. What does music mean to you? Boa: I think music has a healing purpose. When you listen to the right music at the right time, it resonates and provides comfort. (笑) Bohyung: Music is like a friend – you won’t be lonely with music around. I’m focused when I listen to music, so my worries fade away. It feels like I’m floating off to wonderland. (laughs) Q8. Q8. What do you want to say to your fans? Boa: I miss you a lot. Our concert on April 19th has been cancelled, which is a pity as we were looking forward to it. If we get to meet our fans, I want to tell them “Thank you for waiting for us.” Bohyung: Although we can’t meet at the concert venue right now, what we can do is to make up for it with our music in the meantime. I can’t wait for the day where we can have fun at our concert soon. Comments are closed.
